Description
From a Tucson, Arizona collector's estate:Signed work by well listed Navajo artist Robert Chee (1938-1972).
Robert Chee first showed his artistic talent while serving in the Army overseas. Officers arranged for him to paint murals on the walls of army buildings in lieu of other army duties.
Robert's mother, although uneducated in white man's ways, recognized his talent and encouraged him to enroll in the Inter-Mountain School at Brigham, Utah, where he could receive art instruction along with his academic training. While there, he studied with famed Apache sculptor and painter Allan Houser. Mr. Chee went on to have a successful career as an artist and his work was displayed in many galleries in Santa Fe, Albuquerque and Scottsdale.
According to the collector's notebook, he purchased this in 1981.
This work may be either gouache (a variety of watercolor) on paper or an original silkscreen (serigraph). Through a loupe I can see the slightly raised texture of the pigments on the paper. Usually with a silkscreen one can find registration errors where one color overlaps another color. I can find none of these which makes me believe it is a gouache on paper. Look closely and let me know what you think!!
The overall size, including the frame, is 10" by 13". The image size is 5¼" by 7
¼".
The matte and the image itself are in very good condition: no foxing, yellowing or any discoloration. Very minor wear to frame.
Please examine all of the photos carefully and ask any questions before bidding.
