    Description

Authentic Native American Painting on Deer Hide. Had an Appraisal done on the Piece and the following Quote is from the Appraisal Company. It provides details about the work
"The wide outer frame is single-molded and stained a very light tan color. The center bottom has two spaced narrow stripes of deer skin placed horizontally across the frame and the inside white matting which appears to be board. The white matting has an inside narrow deer skin covered wood frame inside of which is a drawing on deer skin. The drawing is of a Native American on horse back holding an upright spear in his left hand; the other horse is riderless. There is an eagle on the top of the drawing and a buffalo on the bottom of the drawing. The colors of the drawing are dark and light turquoise, black, white, grey, red and yellow. The drawing appears to be acrylic paint and does nor appear to be artist signed. The back of the frame is stained a dark brown color and there appears to be leather surrounding the outside edges of the board. There is a horizontal wire hanging apparatus on the upper part of the back. There are four well-known Plains Indian hide (deer skin) painters of the Plains Apache, the Kiowa and the Lakota tribe. Your drawing represents 19th century Native American life on the Plains.
The frame and the deer skin are contemporary; the drawing is of the artist's imagination or was taken from a book on Native American rock art - petroglyphs. The leather on the painting has been tanned and treated to achieve its color. 19th century hide paintings are a traditional Plains Indian artistic practice on either tanned or raw animal hide. The Plains artists were concerned with composition, balance, symmetry and variety. Designs can be similar to those found in earlier rock art and later quillwork and beadwork. Your drawing is referred to as Heraldic painting where men recorded their battles and hunting exploits on animal skin."
