MEXICO CITY, July 26 (Xinhua) — The Mexican government expects to receive more information from U.S. authorities in the next few hours regarding the custody of the leaders of the Sinaloa cartel, a drug trafficking organization, a senior official said on Friday.
The U.S. Embassy in Mexico informed the Mexican side on Thursday afternoon that Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada and Joaquin Guzman Lopez, both leaders of the drug trafficking cartel, were in custody in El Paso, Texas, Secretary for Security and Citizen Protection Icela Rodriguez confirmed at a press conference.
Icela Rodriguez said she still couldn’t define whether it was a surrender or capture, so they were waiting for more information from the U.S. government.
“The information and investigation is being carried out in the United States,” said the minister.
When questioned whether Mexico was involved in the operation, Icela Rodriguez said that the Mexican government did not participate in the arrest or surrender.
The U.S. Justice Department announced on Thursday the capture of Zambada, co-founder and alleged leader of the Sinaloa cartel, and Guzman Lopez, son of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, who is serving a life sentence in the United States. ■
